Trophic guilds of marine predators in the California current large marine ecosystem

چکیده

Quantifying trophic relationships of marine species is fundamental to the construction and performance ecosystem models, development effective ecosystem-based fisheries management strategies, support trait-based approaches ecological risk assessment. Accounting for food web dynamics in taxonomically diverse ecosystems, such as California Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME), especially challenging because sheer number linkages their inherent variability. Consequently, analyses that can inform most appropriate means aggregating or other taxonomic groups into assemblages guilds are critical reducing system complexity modeling management, particularly when data limited. To provide a methodological approach globally applicable cases, we define within biogeographic regions CCLME, compare results among these regions, discuss implications. Within each region, predator were clearly demarcated by foraging habitat (benthic, nearshore pelagic, offshore pelagic), scale movements, position. Furthermore, distinctive with composition noted characteristics largely driving guild structure. Predator reliant on continental slope habitat, adult Pacific Hake, have diets representative areas similar throughout CCLME. Generally, larger, more mobile predators typically feed deeper waters, including swordfish, sea lions, sharks clustered together multiple bioregions along coast; all primarily fishes squids. Throughout bioregions, groundfishes preyed benthic invertebrates (e.g., decapods, amphipods, polychaetes), while shelf-oriented pelagic predators, smaller salmon, euphausiids, copepods, gelatinous zooplankton). A large forage taxa well represented this study dependent oceanographic conditions at regional decapods), basin copepods), combination both Northern Anchovy). Such distinctions indicate spatial temporal scales coherence prey also must be considered models evaluation strategies. Our quantifies integrated over decades across providing an improved understanding functioning. The analytical developed may easily extended address based priorities regions.

Emergence of anoxia in the California current large marine ecosystem.

Eastern boundary current systems are among the world's most productive large marine ecosystems. Because upwelling currents transport nutrient-rich but oxygen-depleted water onto shallow seas, large expanses of productive continental shelves can be vulnerable to the risk of extreme low-oxygen events. Here, we report the novel rise of water-column shelf anoxia in the northern California Current s...

Declining Abundance of Beaked Whales (Family Ziphiidae) in the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem

Beaked whales are among the most diverse yet least understood groups of marine mammals. A diverse set of mostly anthropogenic threats necessitates improvement in our ability to assess population status for this cryptic group. The Southwest Fisheries Science Center (NOAA) conducted six ship line-transect cetacean abundance surveys in the California Current off the contiguous western United State...

Exploring local adaptation and the ocean acidification seascape – studies in the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem

The California Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME), a temperate marine region dominated by episodic upwelling, is predicted to experience rapid environmental change in the future due to ocean acidification. The aragonite saturation state within the California Current System is predicted to decrease in the future with near-permanent undersaturation conditions expected by the year 2050. Thus, ...

Apex predators and trophic cascades in large marine ecosystems: learning from serendipity.

T he global loss of large predators is undeniable. However, the effects of predator depletion on the structure and functioning of ecosystems are far from resolved, especially as they apply to large pelagic marine ecosystems. Much of what we know about how marine predators function in ecosystems comes from small-scale studies on relatively small, slow-moving, seafloorfeeding predators that are e...
